Ft. Smith arena opening gets fire marshal's OK

The town now has the go-ahead from the fire marshall to use the arena this winter, but it won't be able to open until the temporary washrooms and change rooms arrive.

There will be ice in the Fort Smith arena this winter, albeit a few weeks later than usual.

The arena was damaged earlier this year by a fire. The town now has the go-ahead from the fire marshall to use the arena this winter, but it won't be able to open until the temporary washrooms and change rooms arrive.

Jessica Cox is chair of the recreation advisory board and a hockey player. She says the delay is disappointing, but is happy the arena will be around for the winter

"It's fantastic. We've had a sense that things were going to work out with the fire marshall for a little while. I mean the fact we're going to be in the arena this year is very very good news," Cox said.

The town hopes to open the arena by the end of October or possibly the beginning of November.
