A forest fire in Yukon has grown significantly since Wednesday, but officials say for now nearby cabins and the community of Mayo are safe.

The size of the fire jumped from 400 to 600 hectares since Wednesday.

Fire officials say favorable winds are pushing the fire away from the community, and sprinkler systems have been set up to protect cabins closer to the fire.

Firefighters are keeping a close watch on the area as gusty and erratic winds along with possible lightning strikes are forecast for Thursday evening.
