Nunavut’s new jail in Rankin Inlet accepted its first prisoners Wednesday from Iqaluit's Baffin Correctional Centre.
Chris Stewart, manager of capital and special projects with the corrections division in Iqaluit, said it was an exciting day for the department.
Stewart said the first four inmates to arrive at the Rankin Inlet Healing Facility from BCC were from the Kivalliq region.
"It is our hope they're certainly going to be happier to be closer to home," he said.
Stewart said the facility will take more inmates from Iqaluit each week until it fills up. The capacity is about 30 inmates.
The grand opening for the facility is scheduled for Jan. 25.
