Fire damages Inuvik's Polaris Theatre building

At 5 a.m. Wednesday morning, firefighters were called out to a fire at the Inuvik building that houses Alforno's restaurant.

A quick response by fire fighters in Inuvik may have saved one of the towns oldest buildings.

At 5:00 a.m. Wednesday morning, they were called out to a fire at the building that houses Alforno's restaurant.

"Fire originated [in] the back corner of the building," fire chief Jim Sawkins said. "We have yet to determine exact origin of cause but crews are in right now mopping up."

The building was also the town's original Polaris Theatre, and is one of the town's oldest buildings.

The back corner of the building where the fire was appears badly damaged. Its not clear what caused the blaze. It will be investigated.
