A fire caused a lot of damage to a duplex in Hay River, N.W.T., overnight.

The Hay River fire department got the call just after midnight.

Resident Karen Wilford, who lives in the suite adjoining the one where the fire started, said she was woken up at 12:30 a.m. and told to get out.

"We watched last night for about an hour and there was lots of smoke and flames coming out," she said.

"It was really, really scary and I don't want to go through that again."

Fire Chief Ross Potter said no one was inside the other suite at the time of the fire. He said damage to the suite was extensive and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
