Whitehorse emergency responders got a workout today as a Boeing 777 freighter made a forced landing at the Whitehorse airport.
The troubled Fedex jetliner called in the emergency at around 7:25 a.m.
By the time it landed, just before 8 a.m., teams of firefighters and medical responders were on the scene.
A spokesperson for Fedex confirmed that the flight was en route from Memphis to Anchorage when it diverted to Whitehorse "due to technical issues." The company says everyone on board is safe, but would not speculate on the cause of the incident.
“It was a great drill,” says Doris Wurfbaum, a spokesperson for Yukon's Department of Highways and Public Works. “Our crews were on board immediately and everything has gone pretty smooth since."
The incident forced Air North to delay its 8 a.m. flight to Vancouver by an hour.
The U.S. Federal Aviation Authority is now investigating.
