Joamie was vocal in the 'Feeding My Family' movement, which raises awareness about the high cost of food in the North and the difficulties some Nunavummiut face in trying to provide healthy food to their families.

“We found his ATV on a island that forms only at low tide and is all water during high tide,” says Mosesee Qappik, Pangnirtung’s mayor. “That is where searchers found his bike on the first day of searching.”

Qappik says searchers believe Joamie must have drowned.

Local radio stations have been advising residents to keep an eye on the shorelines during low tide.

Qappik says he'd like to thank the local search and rescue team for their tireless efforts in trying to find Joamie.

Members of Joamie's extended family gathered in Pangnirtung over the weekend to hold a memorial service.
