Dettah, N.W.T., chief to stand trial for sexual assault
A Yellowknife judge has ordered the chief of Dettah to stand trial on a charge of sexual assault.
The territorial courtroom was packed Wednesday afternoon for Edward Sangris' preliminary inquiry.
He's accused of sexually assaulting a woman over a period of nine years, between 1986 and 1990 and between 1994 and 1996, in Dettah.
Any evidence, testimony or documents presented at the preliminary inquiry are under a publication ban but the judge determined that there was enough evidence to send Sangris to trial.
Sangris has decided to be tried by a judge and jury.
The case will now go to the Supreme Court of the Northwest Territories and a date will be set for his trial.
