RCMP from the Dawson City, Yukon, detachment shot and wounded a man during an arrest on Thursday.

Officers were trying to arrest the 32-year-old in the Dawson area when he engaged them with a weapon and the man was shot when the officers feared for their safety, according to a statement issued by police Friday.

The RCMP says the officers provided first aid and called for medical help. The man was medevaced to Whitehorse for treatment for non-life threatening injuries. No other details are being released, including where the incident happened.

But the RCMP have closed the Dempster Highway from kilometre 0 to kilometre 8, "until further notice." The area is about 40 kilometres east of Dawson City.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team, a civilian organization that investigates serious incidents involving police, will look into the incident at the request of the RCMP and the Yukon Department of Justice.
