An Iqaluit man is now charged with second-degree murder after a woman he allegedly assaulted died last month in a southern hospital.
Pitseolak Peter, 50, appeared in court Tuesday morning by video from the Baffin Correctional Centre in Iqaluit.
Peter started to cry as the new charge was read by Chief Justice Robert Kilpatrick. Peter then pushed over his chair and walked out of the interview room.
Peter had originally been charged with aggravated assault and breach of probation after he allegedly assaulted Kathy Michael on Feb. 3 in Iqaluit.
At the time, police said that Michael had been severely beaten. She died two weeks later in an Ottawa hospital.
Peter will next appear in court on April 8.
