Officials from Yukon's education department were in Carmacks, Yukon, Monday investigating structural and water damage at the Tantalus School.
They said melting snow on a leaky roof caused the ceiling to collapse some time during the previous week in the annex section of the school. The damage was discovered Monday morning after staff returned from the week-long spring break.
Officials said a significant amount of water had accumulated in the ceiling and the building is very wet. The annex section of the school had most recently been used by students for quilting classes. It's just five years old.
Carmacks is a community of more than 500 people on the North Klondike Highway almost 180 kilometres north of Whitehorse.
