If all goes according to plan, a long-awaited sportsplex in Behchoko, N.W.T., will be open by the summer.

The recreation centre in the Tlicho community of about 2,000 has been closed since 2007, and plans to renovate that building fell through.

Construction on the new 50,000-square-foot Khon Go Cho Complex started in August 2014. It will house an ice rink, gym, youth centre, exercise room and some offices.

The community borrowed $9 million to build the complex, and an additional $6 million came from the Tlicho and federal governments and the Ekati diamond mine.

Behchoko Chief Clifford Daniels says the project is on budget, but there's always a need for more funding.

"We always remind the mines there's still opportunity to help us," he said.

The sportsplex isn't the only big project the community of Behchoko is working on.

A new swimming pool is planned for Edzo. The old pool was destroyed in a fire in October 2014.

Daniels says the new pool has to be built by November in order for insurance to help finance it.
