A group of high school graduates from Baker Lake, Nunavut will soon be heading to the city of stars.

The 13 students have been fundraising for a graduation trip to Los Angeles since the first day of school this year. They’ve raised $35,000 for plane tickets, accommodations, food and activities in L.A and Winnipeg.

They chose Los Angeles as their destination in a vote held last January.

"I chose it because that's the place I've been wanting to go and Los Angeles Lakers is my favourite basketball team," said student Shadrach Mautaritnaaq. "It's my chance to go outside of Canada and explore the world over there."

Hilu Tagoona works at Arctic College in Baker Lake. She volunteered to help organize the trip with the students from Jonah Amitnaaq High School. Tagoona will be one of two chaperones accompanying them.

"We booked what they call Penfield mansion," said Tagoona. "Looking through Trip adviser we managed to find this place, it used to be owned by Frank Sinatra, I guess back in the day. So it's a smaller place, six thousand square feet."

Tagoona says the mansion has four bedrooms, five bathrooms, a swimming pool and a sauna.  She says the group hopes to visit some universities while there and, hopefully, spot some celebrities.
