An Arviat, Nunavut, man was sentenced to nine months in jail Monday for an aggravated assault on his wife.
Joe Kablutsiak, 47, pleaded guilty to the assault that happened in Arviat in the early hours of Christmas Day two years ago.
Kablutsiak threw a tire iron. He said he wasn't planning to hit his wife but instead was hoping to get her to leave the shed.
The tire iron hit the wall, bounced, and hit her, fracturing her skull and face.
She was medevaced to Winnipeg, and after several surgeries, made a full recovery.
Justice Sue Cooper sentenced Kablutsiak to nine months in custody. However, with credit for time already served, he will be released. He will remain on probation for two years.
In her sentencing decision, Justice Cooper said Kablutsiak has had a long, mutually supportive marriage with his wife, marred by violence only when Kablutsiak began drinking in 2009.
One of the conditions of his probation is that he not drink alcohol.
