An Arviat man has pleaded guilty to stealing a handgun from a police detachment and using it to shoot and kill a dog.
Bernie Okotak, 27, appeared at the Nunavut Court of Justice Thursday in Iqaluit.
He admitted to breaking into the RCMP detachment in Arviat last April and stealing a 9-millimetre service pistol. Later that month he used that gun to kill a dog.
The RCMP shot and wounded Okotak while they were arresting him.
Okotak also pleaded to possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and possession of a restricted firearm and ammunition.
The matter will next be in court on March 5.
