This year’s Jon Lindell Memorial senior mens hockey tournament in Arviat, Nunavut, has been cancelled due to lengthy renovations at the community’s arena.

"We will cancel the tournament for this year and run a bigger and better tournament next year," said Jonathan Pameolik, who is on the organizing committee.

Pameolik said with about 120 players expected and other tournaments across the territory, rescheduling is too complicated.  The Jon Lindell tournament attracts teams from across the Kivalliq region and Churchill, Man.

Residents of Arviat were told around Christmas that work at the King Arena would be finished at the end of January.

Pameolik said the tournament was scheduled for the middle of January, then re-scheduled for the middle of February.

According to officials with the Nunavut government, the arena repairs will be done on Feb. 6.

"I guess in the long run, the new arena will be great," he said. "Just thinking about it in those terms, it is disappointing but there's always next year."
