Ken Latour, the acting mayor of Hay River, N.W.T., is stepping out of the race for a seat on town council.

He broke the news to a surprised audience Wednesday night during an all candidates forum. 

"This is really about me coming to the realization that this is not right for me at this time," he said. "I need to focus on some personal goals, some family goals."

Latour’s withdrawal from the race came after the official withdrawal deadline. His name will still appear on the ballot but he is asking people not to vote for him.

Latour was originally elected as a councillor in the last municipal election and became acting mayor after Kelly Schofield resigned in late February.
