3 men safe after jet boat overturns near Mayo, Yukon
Rescued less than an hour after calling for help on satellite phone
Three men are safe after their jet boat overturned early Wednesday evening on the Stewart River near Mayo, Yukon.
Mayo RCMP say the jet boat overturned near Fraser Falls.
All three men were able to reach shore, though one ended up on the opposite bank from the others. One man, 35, was from Whitehorse. The others, aged 48 and 74, were from Fort St. John and Pouce Coupe, B.C.
The boat and all of their supplies were lost. The men started a fire to keep warm and called for help using a satellite phone.
Mayo RCMP officers reached the men within an hour with help from Trans North Helicopters. They were transported to the health centre in Mayo to be checked out. None of the men was seriously injured.
Police say the incident highlights the importance of wearing life-jackets at all times, and of carrying emergency supplies, including a satellite phone or GPS beacon when travelling out in the back country.
