Inuvik RCMP say two men were rescued Friday by helicopter after their snowmobiles went through the ice about 130 kilometres north of the community.

The men, ages 37 and 57, sent a distress message to one of their spouses using a SPOT device early in the morning May 9.

The RCMP, with help from the Search and Rescue Co-ordinator’s Office in Hay River, was able to get their co-ordinates.

A helicopter located them at around 6:45 a.m. warm, dry and in good health and returned them to Inuvik.

The RCMP says the ice conditions in the area are no longer safe for snowmobiling.
