2 inmates charged in Whitehorse prison fire
Two inmates at the Whitehorse Correctional Centre face charges related to a fire that broke out on Thursday.
Several staff and inmates were treated for smoke inhalation from the fire, which began in one of the cells around 3:30 p.m. PT.
While Whitehorse firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze, prison guards who were trying to clear out the cells were attacked by one of the inmates, Whitehorse RCMP said in a news release Friday.
Michael Nehass, 24, will be charged with four counts of assaulting a peace officer while David Geoghegan, 19, faces a charge of arson endangering life.
Both Nehass and Geoghegan, who were treated for minor smoke inhalation at Whitehorse General Hospital, are scheduled to appear in territorial court on Friday.
