Police in St. John's took a young woman into custody on New Year's Day after an officer with the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary was assaulted. 

The RNC said the woman, 19, was arrested in the central area of the city, and was held for a court appearance. 

The incident happened around 7 a.m. on Wednesday. 

Police did not indicate whether the officer was injured. 

Meanwhile, another St. John's woman rang in the new year from a jail cell in a case that also involved RNC officers being assaulted. 

Police were called on New Year's Eve to a disturbance at a house on Forest Road. 

The RNC said when officers arrived on the scene a woman assaulted them. The 56-year-old faces two counts of assaulting a police officer and one count of resisting arrest.
