Woman's death deemed suspicious
RCMP now say the sudden death of a young woman in the Labrador community of Sheshatshiu is suspicious.
However, police also say there's no need for residents to be concerned or fear for their safety.
Asked if that means they have a suspect or person of interest in the case, police would not comment.
The body of the victim, in her early 20s, was discovered Friday afternoon in a wooded area.
Meanwhile, social media has been inundated with expressions of grief and messages of "rest in peace" for the woman, who is originally from Natuashish.
Family and friends had been pleading for help to find her, adding pictures and details on Facebook. According to numerous posts, she was last seen around 3 a.m. Thursday morning near the Sheshatshiu band council office.
A relative in Natuashish confirmed that she had been living in Sheshatshiu for some time.
While RCMP upgraded their description of the death from sudden to suspicious, they stopped short of calling it a homicide.
Investigators with the major crimes and forensics units were en route to the scene from St. John's.
The cause of death is unknown.
