People in the Labrador Innu community of Sheshatshiu are in mourning following a fatal car crash over the weekend.

A car struck a tree on a street in the community early Saturday afternoon.

The 32-year-old woman who was driving the vehicle was killed in the collision, which occurred on Edwards Drive.

The passenger, 33, survived the collision and was taken to hospital and later flown to St. John's to be treated for serious injuries.

CBC News was told that the women were cousins.

The deceased leaves behind a son and daughter, residents said. RCMP have not released the woman's name.

On Sunday, the band council in Sheshatshiu held what was described as a crisis meeting for its members.
