A woman was pronounced dead at the scene of a serious two-vehicle collision Friday on the Trans-Canada Highway near Gambo.

The woman, 59, was the passenger in one of the vehicles involved in the accident, just west of Joey's Lookout.

RCMP believe the car was travelling eastbound and lost control, veering into the westbound lane and colliding with a westbound SUV.

Police said the driver of the car was transported to hospital in Gander with serious injuries.

The occupants of the SUV were treated at the scene for non-life threatening injuries.

Road conditions at the time of the accident were snow-covered and slippery, with strong winds that reduced visibility to near zero.
