A collision on a busy St. John's street on Wednesday night involved at least three vehicles and a suspected drunk driver whose plans to escape were fouled by witnesses.
The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary said a man, 53, was at the wheel of a car responsible for the incident, which was reported at 9:30 p.m.
The RNC said the man tried to run away from the scene but fell and hurt himself.
Witnesses in the area kept the man from leaving until police arrived on the scene.
When the driver was taken to hospital, police demanded a blood sample to determine the level of intoxication.
The RNC said charges are pending against the driver.
