WAM Picks: Battery BBQ, candlelight concerts and Lantern Fest

A theraputic horse riding program, 709 Derby Girls match, and concerts from some of the province's talented musicians are featured on this week's list of must-attend events from WAM host Angela Antle.


Up and Coming Talent: The amazing singer-songwriter KatMcLevey is performing at the Commissariat House on King's Road in a candlelight concert at 8 p.m.

Friday and Saturday: British guitar Jedi Jon Gomm returns with a brand new crowdsourced album called Secrets Nobody Keeps. He's also giving a two-hour guitar masterclass session. You can reserve your spot by sending an email to john@slideguy.net. The concerts are at the LSPU Hall at 8 p.m.


Lanterns galore: The Annual Victoria Park Lantern Festival is taking place this Saturday (Sunday if it's raining)

  • 4 p.m. Yoga (bring your own mat)

The annual parade of lanterns will start at about 8 p.m.

Signal Hill Shakespeare: All's Well That Ends Well. Bring a picnic and something to sit on (and your sweater) to see this Shakespearean rom com at 6 p.m. If the weather looks iffy, a decision will be made 90 minutes before showtime; contact Shakespeare By The Sea at 709-722-7287 to find out of the show will go on. At the Signal Hill Tattoo Field (by the interpretation centre.) Tickets are $25.

Roller Derby Gals: Rivals The Neversweets and The Vixens go head to head for the first time this season at The Glacier in Mount Pearl. Tickets can be purchased at Rosie the Rebel Boutique and The Glacier Arena box office. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.


Free Afternoon Concert: Fred’s Records presents an intimate performance of Ilia Nicoll and the Hot Toddies. Come celebrate the release of Ilia's debut CD at 2 p.m.

Battery BBQ: Come down to the Battery (on foot) and celebrate the vibrant Outer Battery neighbourhood with delicious food and live music from theSTEP Fiddlers and others. Starts at 1 p.m.

Rainbow Riders Family Fun Day: JoinThe Rainbow Riders on Mt. Scio Road for family fun with a bouncy castle, magic show, games, BBQ, bake sale, face painting, and of course pony rides. All money raised at this event will go directly back to a therapeutic riding program. Starts at noon.

Stories at the Peter Pan Statue: Join storyteller Catherine Wright in Bowring Park for stories appropriate for ages 5 and up, starting at 2 p.m.
