Virginia Waters byelection set for April 9
St. John's councillor Danny Breen officially declared candidate for PCs
The date has been set for the byelection in the provincial district of Virginia Waters.
Premier Tom Marshall announced Tuesday that the vote will be held on April 9.
Also Tuesday, the governing Tories announced that St. John's city councillor Danny Breen will be the party's candidate in the byelection.
Cathy Bennett is the Liberal candidate while Sheilagh O'Leary is running for the NDP.
Breen told CBC News he will immediately notify the city clerk of his intention to take an unpaid leave of absence for the duration of the byelection campaign,
"Interestingly enough, there's no requirement for a councillor to remove themself in a case like this, but I have chosen to do so," said Breen, noting councillors are considered part-time positions by the city.
Virginia Waters was left vacant when former premier Kathy Dunderdale left politics in February.
