A vicious assault that took place last week in St. John's has now become a homicide investigation.

On Wednesday, police responded to a disturbance at a home on Tessier Place, where one man attacked another. The victim was taken to hospital in critical condition.

The victim, a 46-year-old man, died overnight at the Health Sciences Centre.

Sgt. Paul Murphy of the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary said an autopsy will be performed.

"And we will await the results from that, and that will be passed on to our investigators, and the investigation will be ongoing from there," said Murphy. "We haven't released a name or anything. We're notifying family and things like that so it might be released at a later date."

Murphy told CBC: "Members of our criminal investigation division are still working as we speak, and they're doing their regular investigation, investigative techniques for this type of complaint. They are just waiting on some more information, and interviewing witnesses, anyone they can find."

Investigators are looking to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the incident.
