Vandals rip into Lab West snowmobile club's chalet
RNC investigating incident discovered at club's warming hut
The president of a snowmobile club in western Labrador is disgusted by vandals who hit a warming hut a few days ago.
"It's unbelievable," said Eldon Wheaton, describing what White Wolf Snowmobile Club members found on Saturday morning.
"The door was damaged, the window was beat out," Wheaton told CBC's Labrador Morning.
"The stove pipe was beat down, the window was beat out, garbage was strewn around everywhere. The biggest damage I'd say was the garbage and the glass and everything that was around everywhere."
The 12x12 chalet is equipped with a stove, benches and amenities to help members who run into foul weather and need sudden and safe shelter.
The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary is investigating the incident.
Wheaton said that other club properties have been vandalized over the years.
"It's so bad with the chalets that we keep a supply of glass on hand" to make quick repairs, he said.
"They're only doing it to spite themselves ... They're going to need that chalet to warm up, and it's not going to be there."
