Firefighters moved fast to contain a row-house fire in downtown St. John's Thursday night.
The blaze broke out around 10:30 p.m.on Allan Square, a small side street just off Queen's Road.
Crews from the nearby Central Fire Station were greeted by flames and smoke pouring out of two attached homes.
Dozens of anxious residents watched from the sidewalk as firefighters scrambled to gain control and stop the fire from spreading.
The four people in the two attached homes managed to escape unscathed. There were no reports of injuries, and no word yet on what sparked the blaze.
The two single-family residences sustained moderate damage.
Police remained on the scene through the night, but handed it over to investigators this morning.
