Central Health has confirmed that two seniors have died of flu-related complications so far this winter.

Health authorities have been limiting visitors at nursing homes across the province to avoid an influenza outbreak.

Full visitor restrictions have been put in place in Lewisporte, Springdale and Brookfield. Central Health also has partial restrictions in Twillingate and Fogo Island.

Dr. Anne Roberts, Chief Medical Officer of Health for Central Newfoundland, said the flu season arrived earlier than usual this year.

"We're surprised. I would have been expecting to be talking to you in eight weeks time perhaps," Roberts said. "This is a very early season, and yes we have had a couple of deaths."

Eastern Health has visitor restrictions in place at eight of its long-term care facilities.
