The Progressive Conservatives announced on Wednesday that their leader — and the next premier — will be picked the first weekend in July.

The Tories announced earlier this week they would hold a leadership convention on the June 27-29 weekend, but later said a lack of hotel space may force them to switch dates.

Now the party has confirmed a convention will take place July 4-5 in St. John's.

Kathy Dunderdale stepped down Jan. 22, after being premier for three years.

Bill Barry is the only candidate so far to officially enter the race, but members of the PC cabinet have said they may be interested in running.

The new party leader will have 12 months to call an election after being sworn in as premier.
