An off-duty Royal Newfoundland Constabulary officer provided a tip to colleagues early Monday morning that led to impaired driving charges.

The RNC said the officer notified the force around 3:10 a.m. of a possible impaired driver in the St. John's area.

Police later charged a man, 29, with impaired driving as well as with operating a motor vehicle while over the legal blood-alcohol limit.

Police said it appears that the man also damaged a guardrail on Robert E. Howlett Memorial Drive.

The man was later released from custody, on an order to appear later in provincial court.
