Police are searching for a man and a woman connected to thefts at the YMCA in St. John's, in an unusual incident that saw a confrontation in the gym's parking lot.

A woman is believed to have stolen personal items, including a coat and car keys, from one of the women's changing rooms at the Ches Penney Family Y on Ridge Road Tuesday afternoon.

Some gym members followed the suspect outside and confronted her in the parking lot.

The dispute turned physical, and the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary were called to the Y around 2:40 p.m., when a woman complained that she was assaulted.

Const. Geoff Higdon said the woman and a second suspect, a man, left the scene in a grey Hyundai — a car that was stolen with keys taken from the gym lockers.

"The suspects, after the alleged altercation, had fled the area — quite rapidly, I understand — in the stolen vehicle and hit another parked vehicle on their way out," he told CBC News.

The same car is linked to a robbery that was reported a few hours later at the Village Shopping Centre, in the west end of St. John's.

Police said they have an idea who the suspects are, but no arrests have been made.

The Ches Penney Family Y is not commenting on the incident.
