Rescue crews were called to Paddy's Pond, just west of St. John's, on Monday night to help a trouter who got lost in heavy fog.

The St. John's Regional Fire Department said the man was fishing alone in a kayak when he could not find his way back to shore. He called for help from his cellphone.

Fire crews shone lights over the pond to assist the trouter, but it too foggy for the lights to help.

The Rovers search and rescue team was called in, and used infrared equipment to help locate the man.

The trouter was brought to shore and was taken to hospital to ensure he was all right.

He finished the expedition hours later than planned, but he had been able to catch a fish.
