An 18-year-old fishery worker from eastern Newfoundland is in hospital after being struck in the head by a heavy block of frozen fish.

Police are investigating the accident, which happened in Bay Roberts Tuesday.

Police said the teenager was working in the hold of the MV Aqviq, where the crew was offloading  fish.

A pallet holding blocks of frozen cod fillets - each weighing between 30 and 40 pounds - was being removed when one of the blocks fell about 25 feet, and struck the worker in the head.

In a statement, the RCMP said the injured man was "reportedly not wearing safety equipment."

Sgt. Boyd Merrill said the man was listed as being in serious but stable condition at hospital in St. John's.

Occupational health and safety officials have been notified.
