Suspensions at Long Harbour site

Vale has confirmed that about 50 of its workers have been suspended after they left the Long Harbour site without permission.

Vale has run into more labour trouble at its construction site in Long Harbour.

The company said about 50 workers have been suspended after they left the work site in Long Harbour without permission Wednesday night.

Spokesperson Bob Carter said the incident started earlier in the evening when three workers were suspended for not wearing proper safety goggles and ear plugs.

Carter said other workers reported feeling ill. They went to the local health centre and then left without being cleared.

The employees were told they were suspended, pending an investigation, when they showed up for work Thursday night.

Carter said the site was operating normally Friday morning.

Last July, a wildcat strike disrupted work at the site for almost a week.
