Summer garden parties draw tourists and donations
August has been garden party season in Newfoundland and Labrador, including the one held recently in Newman's Cove.
The Five Coves Volunteer Fire Department Annual Garden Party takes place in the community each August.
Food donations readily pour in from Upper, Middle and Lower Amherst Coves, Birch Cove, and Newman's Cove on the Bonavista Peninsula.
Food items such as fish, chili, lasagna and a variety of desserts are among the donated items sold at the event.
People like Gail Tilley sometimes volunteer more than 15 hours a day to support the three-day event.
Many visitors to the province attend the event as well, such as Alexandre Chantalexaudre from Montreal, who said that she found out about the event from the provincial tourism guide.
Local talent plays music, provides comedy, and a beauty contest garners a lot of laughs. There are games of chance for the kids.
The $20,000 raised at this year's Five Coves event goes toward supporting the local fire department.
