The deputy mayor of Grand Falls-Windsor has won a sharply contested fight for the Progressive Conservative nomination in a central Newfoundland district.

Susan Sullivan won the nomination in Grand Falls-Windsor-Buchans after final ballots were cast on Monday night.

Sullivan took about 53 per cent of the 1,774 votes cast.

She defeated Ron Smith, a national representative with the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers union, who has had a high profile in recent years defending workers at the embattled Abitibi-Price newsprint mill.

Candidate Darrell Finn, a fellow councillor in Grand Falls-Windsor, placed third.

Liberal Anna Thistle represents the seat, currently known as Grand Falls-Buchans, in the house of assembly.

Thistle, who received 59 per cent of the vote in 2003, will not seek re-election in October.
