Students at Heritage Collegiate in Lethbridge are remembering a friend killed in an accident by giving back to the local animal shelter.
Stephen Brown, 15, died in October 2012 when he drove his brand-new dirt bike into an unmarked chain and cable combination on a gravel road near Lethbridge.
Grade 12 student Jenna Blagdon and a small group of friends are collecting donations for the Clarenville SPCA shelter in his memory.
The drive they organized is called Stacking the Shelves for Steve.
"Steve really loved animals," Blagdon said.
"He would probably be the first of all of us to do this fundraiser for the SPCA …so we just like to do what he didn't get to."
Just in time
The donations will be dropped off at the shelter this Friday.
Clarenville SPCA shelter director, Jewel Pelley, said the donations couldn't have come at a better time.
"We will now have enough food that we will never have to worry about the animals for months," Pelley told CBC.
Thanks to a social media campaign, donations are also being received at shelters across the country.
