Newfoundland and Labrador NDP Leader Lorraine Michael wants Ottawa to appoint someone with safety expertise in the offshore to the C-NLOPB.
Another seat on the board become vacant last week when Reg Bowers resigned. Bowers was Labrador MP Peter Penashue's campaign manager and official agent on his controversial 2011 campaign. Last Thursday, Penashue resigned his cabinet post and seat as Conservative MP for Labrador to run in a byelection.
Lorraine Michael said she hopes patronage will take a back seat in the selection process.
"There is nothing political about the safety of workers on our rigs," said Michael. "The political colours of an individual should not colour decision-making regarding appointments. So, Mr. Speaker, I ask the premier, will she promise this house that she will use her influence to ensure the next person appointed to the board is a safety expert?"
Kathy Dunderdale said she will work with Ottawa in the search for two new appointees to the board. The other seat opened up after vice-chair David Wells was named to the Senate in late January.
