Anyone could hear a pin drop at Newfoundland and Labrador's legislature Wednesday, as a Tory MHA paid tribute to his late wife's "heartwarming and positive spirit," especially in her final hours.
Lewisporte MHA Wade Verge rose in the house of assembly to read a prepared statement about his wife, Maxine, who died this month after battling breast cancer for almost four years.
"In her last remaining hours her breathing was getting harder and she looked to be very uncomfortable in her bed," said Verge, who told his colleagues that he called in a nurse for some help.
"The nurse looked at her and said, 'Mrs. Verge, how are you are feeling?' Maxine could not open her eyes, but she smiled a little and went like this," said Verge, who raised his thumb.
"On March 1, 2013, Maxine put on her wings and she flew up to heaven," said Verge, who is deputy speaker at the house of assembly.
"Her smile, her positive attitude and her spirit will remain in my heart forever. I love you, Maxine, and to you I give a big thumb's up."
Members of the house gave a standing ovation as Verge finished his remarks.
