Pi Gourmet is vying for the title of world's best pizza.

The pizzeria's chefs are heading to the International Pizza Expo, which takes place from March 19-21 in Las Vegas.

Head chef Meghan O'Dea said it's the fourth time the downtown St. John's eatery will compete in the event.

"We're the only ones in Newfoundland [going], and last year, there were only two other Canadian teams," she said.

"And I'm going back this year, and we're going to [win] it."

O'Dea said she thinks Pi's Fibonacci pizza is a major contender in the competition. She said it's the pizza's famous toppings that could nab first place.

"This is our treasure. We call this our gold," she said.

"Pear, caramelized onion.... We really think it's a winner."

There are four divisions of competition in the International Pizza Challenge: traditional, non-traditional, American pan, and Italian-style. Contestants' pies are scored by an independent panel of judges.

Each first place winner will collect prize money ranging from $4,000 to $7,500, depending on the division, and the title of 2013's World's Best Pizzas.

The winners of each division will also compete in a mystery ingredient bake-off. The victor will be crowned the world’s best pizza maker and win an additional $5,000.
