RCMP have confirmed that a 41-year-old man is dead, following a head-on collision near Long Harbour Thursday night. He died at the accident scene.

Sgt. Tom Murray of the RCMP Placentia – Whitbourne District said at about 8:15 p.m. a Honda Accord and a Dodge Journey collided on Route 101, which runs between the Argentia Access Road and Long Harbour. Murray said the Journey had just entered Route 101 and was proceeding up the hill - locally known as Snake Hill - where there are S-turns.

"The north-bound vehicle appeared to be speeding and had lost control, crossed over the centre line and then impacted head-on with the Dodge Journey," said Murray.

The driver of the Accord was ejected from the vehicle.

Two people were taken to the Newhook Medical Centre in Whitbourne with undetermined injuries, and a third person was transported to the Health Sciences Centre in St. John's, also with undetermined injuries.

Both vehicles are being sent for a mechanical inspection. Police said speed may have played a role in the accident, and alcohol has not been ruled out.

The RCMP are not releasing names, but three of the individuals are residents from the Cape Shore. The fourth person is originally from Montreal.
