Ferry service may still be a no-go for Fogo Island, but at least air transportation has resumed.

The island had been isolated by heavy ice and dense fog since last Thursday with no sea or air transportation able to get people on or off the island.

Today, the fog has lifted and fixed-wing air service between Fogo and Gander resumed at 7 a.m.

Helicopter service between Change Islands, Fogo Island and Farewell began at 8 a.m.

Ice conditions 'normal', says Coast Guard official

Meanwhile, Paul Veber, superintendent of ice operations with the Canadian Coast Guard, Atlantic region, said that the ice conditions around Fogo Island are considered to be normal.

"It's probably been 8 to 10 years since we've seen ice conditions like this. But really, what we're experiencing right now is what we would consider a normal ice season," said Veber "We've been spoiled the last few years with lighter ice conditions but it's certainly a wake-up call that normal ice seasons can still occur."

Veber said until the northeasterly winds calm, the ice will continue to be a problem in the Fogo Island area.

The ice is expected to disperse later this week.
