Competition has started at the Labrador Winter Games, following Sunday evening's opening ceremonies.

Hundreds of competitors and spectators packed the E.J. Broomfield arena in Happy Valley-Goose Bay for the event, with teams representing communities from all over Labrador.

Glenda Buckle came from Forteau to watch her son, but she had advice for all the competitors.

"Do your very best, have fun, enjoy yourself and just go for it," said Buckle.

The opening ceremony featured a children's choir and traditional drumming, but young participant James Cabot had more than singing on his mind.

"This week I hear Rick Mercer's going to be here, I'm excited for that," said Cabot.

Mercer is due in Happy Valley-Goose Bay to tape segments for his popular CBC Television program, The Rick Mercer Report.

30th anniversary

This year marks the the 30th anniversary of what many people refer to as the "Olympics of the North".

There will be competition in many sports, such as cross-country skiing and snowmobile racing, as well as traditional Labrador sports, such as dog team racing and the one-foot high kick.

On Monday, target shooting, table tennis and snowshoe races have been scheduled.

CBC in Newfoundland and Labrador will bring you stories from the week's activities, with Here and Now's Debbie Cooper and many other members of our team covering the games on CBC Television, CBC Radio One, and CBC online.
