A mayor on Newfoundland's west coast is feeling better about plans to open an addictions recovery centre in her community.
A meeting was held Tuesday night between 70 residents of Glenburnie-Birchy Head-Shoal Brook and the new owner of the Red Mantle Lodge.
Mayor Marilyn Wight said the town had no notice about Serenity on the Rock's plans for the building.
The town is located in Gros Morne National Park, and Wight said they were particularly concerned about losing accommodation in the area.
"We're pleased to say that the Red Mantle Lodge will still be operated, it will be a resort with a focus on healthy living, some place to come for relaxation and rejuvenation," said Wight. "The only difference in what they're advertising is [that] the word 'licensed' has been removed from the dining room, so this will be a completely alcohol-free facility."
Wight said the centre will offer services and activities that residents can take advantage of, such as yoga classes, nutrition workshops, and alcohol and grief counselling.
Serenity on the Rock is the same company that tried to open an addictions centre in central Newfoundland, but met with too much opposition from residents.
