Residents of St. Brendan's, in Newfoundland's Bonavista Bay, have ended their protest and released the ferry Grace Sparkes.

The vessel is currently on its way to Conception Bay, where it will fill in on the Bell Island service run.

Residents of the community were preventing the boat from leaving on Tuesday in protest of the temporary replacement.

St. Brendan's Mayor Veronica Broomfield said residents decided last night to let the Sparkes leave.

However, she said they're still unhappy about having an older ferry assigned to their route for the next 10 weeks.

The town will continue to receive ferry services with the Sound of Islay, an older vessel in the provincial fleet.
