Newfoundland and Labrador's fuels regulator lifted the ceiling Thursday on gas prices, with consumers paying an extra three cents for every litre they buy.
The Public Utilities Board allowed retailers to raise the price of gas by as much as 3.0 cents per litre on all grades of gas. The increase may be slightly less in some areas because of rounding for taxes, and some retailers charge less in order to lure consumers.
The PUB's weekly price setting means that gas stations on the Avalon Peninsula can now charge as much as $1.409 for a litre of self-serve unleaded gas. Prices are generally higher in other parts of the province.
The increase continues an upward trend of recent weeks, with prices now about 10 cents higher than they were at the beginning of January.
The cost of driving for truckers, though, dropped overnight, with diesel fuel down by 0.4 cents per litre.
Home heating fuel also decreased, with stove oil dipping by 0.16 cents per litre. Stove oil dropped 0.32 cents per litre, while propane increased by 1.8 cents per litre.
The chart below shows how average gas prices in Newfoundland and Labrador have changed over the last 12 months, compared to both changes in the national average for gas prices and the global price of oil.
