A man who reported being mugged in the east end of St. John's overnight now faces a charge himself.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary received a complaint a few minutes before midnight on Monday that a man had been held up on Torbay Road.

The man, 20, told police that he was attacked from behind while he was walking in the area near Highland Drive.

He told police that the supposed thief had stolen money as well as some personal effects.

However, after a bit of checking, police found the story did not hold up, and charged the young man with mischief instead. He was released from custody and will appear later in provincial court.
